The Hashknife Outfit :: essays research papers

Section 1 IntroductionWhen the Aztec cows community ("The Hashknife habilitate") first got to northeastArizona, they gear up knee-high grass as far as they could see. They moved oxen fromTexas to Arizona and just unplowed bringing in more and more. They ran those cattle onabout 2 million acres of land between Flagstaff and New Mexico. The cattle grazed thegrass off and the drought that had already started kept more grass from growing in. There was already very little water, so the cattle started dying off by the thousands. Country that used to anticipate like an ocean of grass turned into a dried out, windblasted desert. During this same time, the railroads were being put in across the countryand cattle were starting to be shipped on trains. (This meant higher transportation costswhen cattle prices were starting to go down.) Some of the worst parts of Arizonas history was caused by the Hashknife Outfitand its cutthroat hired help. Mormon settlers were harassed, robbed, and run out of thecountry. Cattle were stolen from the settlers and other ranches. But the worst problemsfrom the Hashknife cowboys was had by the sheepmen and the towns people. Towns likeHolbrook were the scenes of killing, drinking, whoring, and troublemaking. Thesheepmen were harassed, their sheep killed, and sometimes got themselves killed.Section 2 The hunt The Hashknife Outfit pioneered large-scale cattle ranching in Arizona but theirovergrazing scarred the land, drought and hard winters killed the cattle, and theircriminal behavior made its mark on Arizonas history. The "Hashknife brand resembled a cooking utensil used by chuckwagon cooks tochop up meat and potatoes for hash. The brand was owned by the Aztec Land and CattleCompany and was used to brand thousands of cattle. Many cattle ranches came to beknown by their brands instead of by their company names because it was easier forpeople to remember--thats why the Aztec Land and Cattle Company was called the"Hashknife Outfit".(my mom--Arizona family verbal tradition)"The Hashknife Outfit was established in northern Arizona in 1884. Ashareholder in the Atlantic and Pacific sandbag persuaded a group of Eastern investors topurchase a million acres of grazing land offered for sale by the railroad. The new ranch, called the Aztec Land and Cattle Company, brought in 33,000 head of Texas LonghornCattle, a large remuda (herd of saddle broke horses) of horses, and the Hashknife brand"(Hughes xi). When the stockholders of the Aztec Land and Cattle Company were first meetingto form the company, cattle prices were already headed downward.

Environmentalists Essays -- essays research papers

Bill McKibben and Edward Abbey atomic number 18 twain modern environmental writers who have had a noticeable impact on the environmental movement. nonpareil of Abbey&8217s novels, The Monkey Wrench Gang, was an inspirational piece for some of the founders of Earthfirst, a far-left environmentalist group. McKibben&8217s most famous novel, The End of Nature (1989), is more astray read than any other nature book since Rachel Carson wrote Silent Spring. Abbey, who is commonly associated with the Southwest,a has often been described as possessing a bitter but passionate attitude. A past including careers as a ranger and a firefighter indicate his attachment to the wilderness that he considers &8220our natural home is something very real to him. His concept of &8220Eco-Defense, in which he gives environmentalists a right to protect their home, is an original and unique way of thinkng of environmental protectionism. McKibben shows us the damage we have d i to the natural world and make s a plea for an end. He was born to two journalist parents, married a journalist, and wrote for and edited the The New Yorker . Abbey and McKibben write differently but they are bonded in that they both demand change.Abbey and McKibben would agree that something is wrong with America&8217s attitude toward the environment. However, Abbey&8217s writing invites doing battle with those who invade the forests while McKibben simply tries to point out that on that point is a problem and that something radical must be done to eliminate it at its base. Abbey&8217s essay, Eco-Defense, and McKibben&8217s essay, Not So Fast both choose the ratifier to act radically. However, Abbey writes as if to de-emphasize the radicalism of his solution while McKibben is blunt as he explains that the only sane option is something that is contradictory to societies current values. two McKibben and Abbey&8217s audiences have proven them to be effective as persuasive writers. What is it about their writing that makes it work?Abbey&8217s writing is intended to stir the reader&8217s instincts. He begins his essay with an example of self-defense in the home. This is something that most people can come together and agree on. Abbey writes, &8220Self-defense against attack is one of the basic laws not only of human society but of life itself, not only of human life but ... ...rgy conservation are highlighted because they are applicable and are examples of the macro-environmental problem that most people fail to see. The emphasis is not that we have a moral issue to change but that we must.McKibben gives us a journalistic viewpoint, which cannot be ignored. He quotes an interview he had with Al Gore in which Gore said, &8220The maximum that is politically feasible, even the maximum that is politically imaginable right now, still falls short of the minimum that is scientifically and ecologically necessary. If this is true then why do so many people fail to recognize it? McKibben sums it up in one powerful phrase, &8220Change frightens us.Abbey and McKibben have influenced the environmental movement in two different ways. Abbey gives those who are already involved some of his passion and has inspired many people to sacrifice for what they come to believe in. It is a hot-blooded brand of environmentalism. McKibben presents us with information that we should not be able to ignore with good conscience, attempting to change our minds without manipulating them. Either way, both writers have been successful in the purpose they are writing for.

Sports Narrative - Wrestling :: Personal Narrative Essays

Personal Narrative- Wrestling CLAP, CLAP, CLAP, CLAP, echoes through my head as I walk to the middle of the mat. At 160lbs Aidan Conner of La junta vs. Rodney Jones of Hotchkiss. All I can think of is every bead of sweat, every drip of blood, every mile, every push up, every tear. Why? All of this on the dot to be victorious. All in preparation for one match, six minutes. For round these six minutes may only be a glimpse, and then again for some it may be the biggest six minutes of their life. Many get the chance to experience it more than than once. Some may work harder and want it more than others, but they may never get the chance. All they get is a moral victory. Every kid, every man comes into the tournament with a goal. For some is to win, for some is to hindquarters, others are just happy to qualify. These six minutes come on a cold frigid night in February at a place c alled the Pepsi Center. Once a year this gathering takes place when the small and the large, the bes t of the best, come to compete in front thousands of people. I am at the atomic number 27 State Wrestling Championships.Ever since the previous pacify I had my standards set high. I had placed fifth, which was all right for the time being, but I knew as time went on I needed to push myself and increase my level of wrestling. I decided that I would do whatever it took, through thick and thin. I traveled to small local tournaments in Colorado, and a couple out-of-state tournaments, I even traveled to Delaware. It didnt really matter how I did at these tournaments because it was just all practice until February. So, I lifted and wrestled just about every chance I got. It was all in preparation for one match, six minutes.Starting the season as the endorse ranked wrestler in the state, I was just where I wanted to be, noticed, but not the top dog. I did strong during the season not losing to anybody in the 3A classification. I didnt do quite what I wanted, but I wasnt going to compla in. A broken hand after the second weekend of competition didnt help any, but I fought through it and kept my eyes set on one opponent, one goal, one match, six minutes.
